This song is a Negro Spiritual written by a people who lived in the most adverse circumstances. All they knew had been stripped from them, their country, name, language, family, their dignity and they were even declared not even to be completely human. I can't help but imagine how they must have felt, yet they clung to Jesus. The one thing that could not be stripped from them was their relationship with God. From this experience came the song Give Me Jesus.
